PLACES SACRED TO THE OLYMPIANS

I love the Acropolis!

The major Olympians each had their special towns and cities where they were worshipped as patron gods. Temples were built and festivals held in their honor, and people would beseech their patron god in times of need. Because of numerous requests I have provided a list of the main gods, their Roman names and the places that were considered sacred to them.

Zeus (Jupiter) - Crete, Olympia, Dodona

Hera (Juno) - Argos

Apollo - Delos, Delphi

Aphrodite (Venus) - Cyprus, Cythera

Artemis (Diana) - Delos, Delphi, Brauron

Ares (Mars) - Thebes, Thrace

Athena (Minerva) - Athens

Dionysus (Bacchus) - Delphi, Delphi, Asia

Demeter (Ceres) - Eleusis

Hermes (Mercury) - Mt. Cyllene, Arcadia

Hephaestus (Vulcan) - Lemnos, Athens

Poseidon (Neptune) - Athens, Crete

Note:

The Home was sacred to Hestia

The realm of Hades was the Underworld
